Chennai: The CJP on Thursday staged a protest opposing the SIR exercise and seeking the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

According to the CJP members, actor Prakash Raj was expected to take part in the protest. However, Raj did not turn up.

Defying an official denial of permission from the Chennai Police, the CJP coordinators initiated their demonstration near Rajarathinam Stadium at around 4 pm. Over 100 youngsters participated. The CJP members were asked to leave the venue in about two hours by the police.

Similar protests earlier in the month saw over 100 people detained in Chennai.

The Chennai demonstration is part of a nationwide movement spearheaded by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke opposing the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
